Faculty Resources

The Rice Summer Undergraduate Research (SUGR) Support Program is a collaboration among the Office of the Provost (OSEI, OURI, GPS, CAPC), the School of Engineering, and the School of Natural Sciences to provide assistance to faculty hosting undergraduate researchers over the summer. The SUGR Support Program helps faculty and staff navigate the logistics of hosting students on campus over the summer; offers mentor training for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; and provides the option of two program tracks designed to meet the particular needs of your program and students: Track 1: Novice Intensive, designed for 10-week programs that run from May 24-July 31 and target novice researchers, and Track 2: Open Engagement, intended for programs with varying dates and lengths and/or for more advanced researchers.

This page and the linked resources explain the processes involved in hosting summer researchers, responsibilities of faculty and staff, and resources available to support you and your students. Please review before completing the program registration.

Program Registration

If you are interested in being a part of the program, please register your program through the Summer 2026 Program Registration form  by October 20, 2025. We understand that funding or other details may not be secure by this date but prefer that you register a pending program so that we are sure to have you in our workflow and are ready to support you once plans are finalized.

To complete the form, you will need the following information: program dates, application deadline, anticipated number of students and rooms in Rice housing, if offering, program contacts, and track selection. Faculty who plan to use the Slate application portal and to advertise at reu.rice.edu will need to provide additional information about the goals of the program and the application requirements. Please consult the Faculty and Staff Handbook for more information and resources to prepare for program registration. After registering your program, you will received regular communication from the SUGR Support Program staff and be able to take advantage of streamlined processes to promote, plan, and execute your program.
